I was strong enough to say no to my mom and her desire for a trophy kid. But I still see families where the parents push the kids to major in math/science/ engineering/business even if the kid has no interest in the subject matter. These parents just want to have a trophy kid with a prestigious job title and social status. They refuse to recognize that just because the kid majors in a certain subject, there is no guarantee of a high paying job. I have heard stories of lawyers, science, engineering and business majors who aren’t working in their fields and are just lucky to have any type of job. People refuse to recognize that there just aren’t that many high paying jobs available.

At the same time I believe that many Millenials like me have realized that working 80+ hours climbing the corporate ladder is not a desirable way to live. And my peers are rebelling against this but it is their parents who can’t accept that reality. My generation wants to work to live, not live to work. Among the females that I know, not a single one dreams of being a CEO of a major Fortune 500 company or getting married at 40 and having kids later. We want loving stable relationships and decent jobs.

To reinforce the point, television is generally aimed at middle-age women.

And there are plenty of buffoonish male characters in TV!

Good for you for pushing back against expectations that you knew would just make you miserable. Many young people have more difficulty doing this, especially if love is made to seem conditional as a result of disappointing parents. I’m glad your generation is saying “no thanks.” I have been reading a book about feminism where the author does point out that my generation of women made choices our daughters want no part of. Clearly, “having it all” does not make for an enjoyable life. In the brief period I tried it, I was so stressed out I was breaking out in hives.
