In the spring of 1819, a young fellow by the title of Henry Shaw from Sheffield, England landed in the small French village if St. Louis, Missouri. There he set up a business selling hardware to the settlers that had been heading out from the "Gateway to the West." Company was good and he was in a position to retire by the age of forty. Ole Henry would soon turn out to be the largest landowner in the city. He built Tower Grove Home, which grew to become his estate, and bought fairly a little bit of land around it.
